Inside this Citied Cage

Hello, do I know you? Should I take your name? Are there fires in the rafters? Are you the one to blame? Nobody knows who cut the wires Nobody knows who set the world ablaze I should call you after midnight And change the rules of this twisted game If you hide, we will find out where you’ve been If you lie, we will show the things you’ve said If you run, we will follow after you If you die, welcome to the zoo Are you in there? Can you hear me? Do you know the path that lies ahead? Are there answers in the rafters? You better hope the people are misled Nobody knows who set the fires Nobody cares about the coming flame Did you know it’s almost midnight And I’m about to start another game If you hide, we will find out where you’ve been If you lie, we will show the things you’ve said If you run, we will follow after you If you die, welcome to the zoo Hello. Yes, I know you. I remember your name All those fires in the rafters, yes, you are the one to blame You think you know about the wires You think you know you set the world ablaze Well, here it is, it’s after midnight And we know you lost another game If you hide, we will find out where you’ve been If you lie, we will show the things you’ve said If you run, we will follow after you If you die, welcome to the zoo If you stay, then we will show you the front door If you try, you’ll end up on the floor If you run, we will follow after you If you die, then welcome to the zoo

Resist 04:19
Step away, I don’t need to change a thing I don’t need you breathing down my neck You don’t know the things I’ve seen You’re not the boss of me I bet you think there is nothing here for you And you’d be right, for all you put me through There’s a door that one of us should take At this point, what difference does it make? And if I look, it doesn’t mean I’m looking for a change I want to feel the dirt on my hands Don’t believe in what I’ve said or done Half the time, I’m always on the run You don’t need the forest for the trees You’re not the boss of me There are ways to change, but I don’t care I’m not the one to wait and then fight fair There’s a door that one of us should take And at this point, what difference does it make? And if I look, it doesn’t mean I’m looking for a change I want to feel the dirt on my hands

Where were you standing when the walls came down? Were you handing out mistakes on the other side of time? Were you crossing the lines when the soldiers arrived? Did you cross at the river? Is that how you survived? Where did you go when the streets were filled with rage? Were you looking for exits inside this citied cage? Were you making your music when the walls began to burn? Did you hide in the hallways and hope the tide would turn? Did you find any answers before you closed the door? Did you find any answers about this dirty war? What did they tell you the outcome would be? Did it fill you with fear, all the anger you’ve seen? Where did you go when the streets were filled with rage? Were you looking for exits inside this citied cage? What were you doing when the towers came down? Were you looking for shadows on the other side of town? Where you standing in line when the soldiers arrived? Did you cross at the river? Is that how you survived? What did they tell you the outcome would be? Did it fill you with anger, all the fear that you’ve seen? Where did you go when the streets were filled with rage? Were you looking for exits inside this citied cage?

Frame 05:21
Alone inside a tube At home with steel and glass Where do I belong and where do I begin to fade away? Where do I make my stand? Afraid of drifting through the sand Where do I begin and how should I begin to fade away? Maybe you should walk away Before you try to understand A picture is worth a thousand words Even when there is nothing left Alone inside an empty tomb At home beneath the hills and grass Where do I belong and when do I begin to fade away? Now it’s time to make a stand And show the others where I stand Where do I begin to change and face the Sun another day? Maybe you should walk away Before you try to understand A picture is worth a thousand words Maybe you should run away Before you can understand That a picture is worth a thousand words Even when there’s nothing left Alone inside another tube At home with walls of steel and glass Where do I begin to change and face the Sun another day?

Letter Box 05:22
Frozen inside a letter box Broken inside a cage Echoes inside a memory of you Chosen to be an advocate for change Inside this mirror Echoes inside of echoes inside of you And a turn of phrase is not the same as yesterday Melting inside this letter box And twisting inside a pool Echoes betray a memory of you Abandoned to be a memory A stone to be removed Echoes inside of echoes inside of me Echoes A turn of phrase is not the same as yesterday And yesterday has turned to something new Inside of you

I float alone as I fall into night I remember the roads I’ve taken I remember putting up a fight But now it’s time to roam I face the Sun as it’s floating out in space I think about the places I’ve been And I can feel the light on my face But now it’s time to roam To find another home Falling into night Falling through the light The path is clear, as I forge ahead The stars are lined with trees The roar of waves as I ascend And now it’s time to roam To find a better home Falling into night Falling through the light And I know I will return I will see you at the end of the world And as I drift into eternal night I remember the sound of your voice I remember everything that’s right And now it’s time to roam And make a better home Falling into night Falling into the light

Somewhere out there, I lost my soul I lost the thing that means the most I’ll double back and see the world I’ll find the path as I return Another day has passed me by Another night Another sky “Retrace your steps to find your soul” A life in flux, a life that’s whole

about

A sound. A memory. An idea.

Imagine David Bowie and Brian Eno in Berlin during the mid 70's. But not the Berlin and mid 70's that we know. Something at an angle. A different lens, perhaps. The sounds were a decade away, and the world was in flux.

Imagine writing letters to each other, posting them and waiting days for correspondence, whilst living under the same roof. Talking, playing, writing. And the letters become a different thing.

Imagine shifts in regimes and power. Image living with an instigator. Imagine change and resisting change.

Imagine doorways.

Imagine losing the voice of an Angel, but still hearing her voice everywhere.

Imagine losing yourself, and then becoming something new.

Oblique Strategies guided the lines, but there was always Bowie and Eno: experimenting, blending, changing.

"Falling into Night" is for Julee Cruise.

I love the sound of the Roland Juno synthesizers of the 1980's. So many memories involved with those sounds. So many bands that I love had/have that sound. Juno 60 and Juno 106.

Written and recorded over eleven days in June 2022 (June 07-June17).
