The Bad Lands

1.
I watched the cold, blue sky turn grey And I sheltered with the coming rain Just an ordinary storm Lightning, when it tickles the ground With a fire and an ominous sound And safety is not easily found Just an ordinary storm I huddle by myself today The same as all my yesterdays An ordinary storm Just an ordinary storm Give me a night full of memories And hopes that never fade I will see them through Dream of the days I can see the Sun And find all the paths that will lead me home Before summertime There’s somewhere I’d rather be I’m filled with an urgency To capture some hydrogen In an ordinary storm Just an ordinary storm Oh, to keep me warm Give me a night full of memories And a hope that never fades I will see it through I dream of the days I can see the Sun And find all the paths that will lead me home Before summertime There is somewhere I’d rather be I’m filled with an urgency To capture some hydrogen In an ordinary storm Just an ordinary storm Oh, to keep me warm

Broken Moon 05:04
No one seems to be around these days The must be hiding from the Sun again I hope they’re underground Maybe I’ll find them, hiding in the treetops Maybe they’re hiding in the waves I hope they’re underground There doesn’t seem to be a signal My echoes appear to be unheard I hope they’re underground They haven’t made a sound Bring me a sign that there is someone home And a place to come down safe And I’ll be satisfied Show me a line I can follow home Lead me past the broken Moon Across the frozen sky And there is someone I hope to see Another trace of my heredity Maybe distant family I hope they’re underground I hope they can be found again I haven’t heard a sound Bring me a sign that there is someone home And a place to come down safe And I’ll be satisfied Show me a line I can follow home Lead me past the broken Moon Across the frozen sky Across an empty sky And there is someone I hope to see Another trace heredity And maybe some distant family I hope they’re underground I know they can be found again I think I heard a sound

Our Tale 04:55
I saw a fire in the sky Something falling, something very old But it didn’t break apart Like everything else had done It headed towards the Sea And maybe I can be the first one there When I got there, exhausted There were footprints all around it And a man in white raised his hand as if to say hello His words were strange But I was able to catch his drift And we came to understand That we should leave this place As the Sun set, we grabbed what we could And sealed up the rest We would find a place to stow away We could come back another day The man was a traveller from a bygone age And he journeyed to another world And he left his home in a tattered state And he didn’t know what he would find when he got back To the only home that he ever knew That he could ever know No, no, there is something near by We can hide for the night But it doesn’t mean his capsule is safe And it doesn’t mean we won’t die But I’ll keep him safe with my life I hope it doesn’t come to that When I was a child I was told the history of my family Of man who chased the stars and tried to save the world From itself, from the fools who lived on it, and those to come I told him how the world had changed And how it had stayed the same How the people stayed alive underground And deep beneath the sea When the morning came We roamed around and foraged We found the capsule gone Dragged into the Sea- I told him They’re a little like you, and they’re a little like me We have all we need, we have all we need Now it’s time to make our way home And tell others our story And tell others of our tale Tell other our tale
4.
Dragons 04:12
Have you ever seen a dragon? A world on fire, and covered in ash? As I was leaving the world The Earth was being burned I heard the screaming, I saw the chaos They sent me wishes, and then went dark And upon my return, I found everything lost And I was crushed But you started over from a broken history As I found my way back to you and the Earth I struggled with all I had There was nothing left that I could call my home Just a memory and a hope And now the world has changed in so many ways I don’t know where to begin Where are the cities and the crowded airports? Where are the hospitals and schools? What ever happened to the dragons? They burned the Earth, and left you behind The climate deniers and cultish zealots They changed the face of the world I hope you never see a dragon The fall of men who stole from the world You have reclaimed the ruins You have made a home
5.
You must be careful now with your words They can change the story, and the terms You mustn’t scare him, or drive him away He might be our only link to the past Maybe he’s waiting to find all the answers Maybe he’s looking for an out These problems are weighted, filled with a poison We should let him find them by himself By now the others will know he’s among us Some are angry, some of them scared The others are coming, they come from the wastelands A shadow is rising, and he cannot stop it Maybe it’s time to get him away And find some other shelter And stay out of sight for a long, long time He might be old enough to know That he can change our world But he needs to hide to stay alive
6.
My young friend Where are you taking me now? To another village? To another hideout? My young friend What did you leave behind? Can you feel the danger? I can feel the anger? Now we run in winter Where are the hunters That drive you into the night? My young friend What is the meaning of that? There’s a light up in the sky Is it tracking us through the night? My young friend Are you missing your home? Are you missing the ones who love you? Are you missing the one who loves you? Now we run in summer With all the hunters Driving us into the light There’s a fire in heaven And now you tell me I’m not the only one
7.
I heard she was living out in the wastelands I heard she was claiming it as her homeland She better not catch me I raided her often I’d rather not stay in the open Near her wasteland We won’t be offered any of her graces She captures any girls she finds in these places They say she came here from the skies They say she opened up their eyes They horde away all that they find And take the girls that were left behind My sisters and I were scavenging supplies She came up silently and whispered “You’re done” We scattered so quickly That I didn’t notice My sisters were taken alive in these places And I hear they’re still alive They search the land and the skies They are looking for a man Who fell to Earth one stormy night So know that you are not the only one You fell to Earth with the rising Sun And now we have to make our run Before our chances come undone We have to try and find him alive If we can make it through this night We have to keep on trying We have to stay alive
8.
In This Land 04:14
In this land, there is one who delights me She steals my food and abuses my amnesty She has a man who may not remember That we were the ones who fled the Earth together But I have to stay As she hides him away There were nine who rocketed out With differing ideologies Headed off away from Home We found the stars, and they were empty And I turned to follow the crumbs That were left behind By the fading ones I am glad I flew away I wouldn’t be here today Centuries had passed me by As I sped through the stars, Like a dragonfly Coming home was a trial by fire When I came out alive, Circumstances were dire There were sheep all around me And they needed a wolf to wear a crown of swords To be their goddess, royalty Rule with iron fists and tyranny I am adding up all the lovely years Since the day I arrived The others scattered through out the stars While some others fell behind They must not run They must not even try to hide I need his capsule sooner than I would like to confide Should I take a chance And leave my throne to circumstance? Because my death is not far away There were five who made it back Two have passed the gates, deep into the black Now the two that are one the run, One lead by the girl, the other, traces none I need the girl and her ancestor Should I send out the dogs for that dinosaur? And if they fail, there are options to weigh Do I send out her sisters, have them enter the fray? Nothing left but the savagery, do I face it alone The unconquered sea?
9.
The Watcher 03:00
I am sitting here, all alone on this hill And I watch as the Queen wreaks havoc with all her might She thinks she’s alone She thinks she’s alone On this hill, I can see for miles and years Has it been a hundred or more? She doesn’t know Not a clue that I was first The young woman and her charge Are heading North through the trees While the Chaos Queen sends her hounds To the South and to the East There is a man in the West Who many say has come from the stars But they don’t know that he came here From the North On a clear day I can see that cruel path Of daggers that threatens the world But the Queen is not aware Of the coming storm, it comes from the sea They come from the sea From under the sea And she doesn’t know That her end is nigh
10.
We hide in the mountains We run through the valleys We hunt in the darkness And we hide out from the Sun We know that they’re out there Searching for answers We were saved by the Watcher And saved by his subterfuge And now we change direction West We’ll try to save another soul As we head towards the wastelands, towards the wastelands All the lives we try to save All the faces passing by As we head through the wastelands I don’t know where this canyon leads I don’t know if hounds will follow There is smoke in the sky behind us There is fire from the Eye of the World And I hope there are holes in the dirt That will hide us in the Earth Maybe they’ll pass over us That thunder crash is ominous Visibility was low And they couldn’t find us And to the breach we will go We hid in the caverns We ran through the trees And there he was waiting To help us to overcome And now we will head back With three we have a chance As we backtrack the wastelands We’ll gather forces North Trying to survive And we’ll take back the wastelands Take back the wastelands We’ll take back the wastelands Take back the wastelands
11.
There’s something that’s missing And I wouldn’t bother But I feel that it’s important If we plan to stop her I know that your sisters Were taken and dishonored But I feel I should remind you That they were innocent Should we break our holy trio And take on different faces He and I are strangers here We come from different places We will follow your direction We will take up your position And we can keep them safe I know that you are faster But they have the numbers After a while it can bog you down And you start to fall behind We know that you want her We know that you can take her It’s time to give an answer For we need to choose a path Time to save your sisters It’s time to change the future Time to look behind you And see where you have gone
12.
I have taken her sisters I have hidden their things I have placed them beside me I have broken their wings She never arrived She lost her courage She didn’t save them She troubles my dreams A knife in my side I think they are coming With the morning tide They never arrived They lost their courage They didn’t try Where are the sisters? Where is my prize? I couldn’t keep them But where can they hide?
13.
The hardest way for any man to fall beneath A hired sword, is to call them out for being discreet When they could hide behind a mask of anonymity Can you feel the coming storm, and the thrill Of certainty that you will die and leave behind A little piece of you it becomes a token prize Find your peace, I’ll wait until you have the time To face your fate, with dignity, an open state of mind And I will take my time to serve what the Queen has authorized Wait, this isn’t right, you shouldn’t be able to do those things Who taught how to undermine assassins and their poison rings? I can’t believe I lost to a child
14.
As the seas rage and the towers fall They came from the waters at the sirens’ call And at the charge came the capsules, all And the other four taking up the thrall Will she fall? As all her minions take up the fight Not confused at all Hear a wailing, the frightful sounds of war With the sisters back to back again They took out the minions with a violent crash And beside them, a couple astronauts Fighting for their lives As she falls The Eye in the sky, starts to descend With no power at all See the sparks fly, showering like rain When the smoke cleared, nowhere to be found The Chaos Queen ventured underground With her rule broke, a chance for peace again At least until the next one comes Waterfall It’s time to heal As the Sun breaks through the clouds Hear the laughter, and the sounds of peace
15.
I remember the light Of the stars Reflected on the Moons I remember what she told me As we flew our separate ways “I’ll find my way back home” And she did, she found a broken world She made it all her own And then I didn’t know her I thought about her words They haunted my travels And I didn’t notice When I crossed the threshold The stars swirled around me And planets abundant I thought I was tripping But I was a witness I floated for ever And I thought I lost it I don’t know what I found But I know it found me They kept me alive and Then they gave me purpose And sent me on my way To help other humans I awoke closer to the Sun Than I had been in years I recognized the planets I recognized the spheres And now they didn’t haunt me They welcomed me back home They filled me with a hope They welcomed me back home And when I saw the Earth I understood the Others They wanted to help Earthlings And save a broken world I thought about her words They haunted my travels And I didn’t notice When I crossed the threshold The stars swirled around me And planets abundant I thought I was tripping But I was a witness I floated for ever And I thought I lost it I don’t know what I found But I know it found me They kept me alive and Then they gave me purpose And sent me on my way To help other humans The Earth was above me The Moon slanting backwards The fires encased me And I was in freefall The radio silent The screens were all vacant The wind broke the silence And I was in freefall My memories broken My capsule was warming The windows were frozen And I was returning The ground was beneath me And I was alive now The sand the scripture On what I believed now I remember the light Of the stars Reflected on the Moons

about

This album started life as something else. One of my music-brothers, Kevin, suggested a musical exercise: that I write songs to lyrics he would send me and that those lyrics were from a band I had never heard of. The songs were from one of his favorite albums.

I had no idea what type of music or band this was. So, eleven songs later, when he revealed the band and album, it had turned out that my songs were quite different. The lyrics lead me in a different direction.

Well, I couldn't release that album, as that band is somewhat known, and I didn't want to release an album of songs that were, lyrically, someone else's and already alive and experienced as something else.

So I wrote a new story and lyrics, and expanded that little universe to fifteen songs.

This album is a sequel, of sorts, to Uprising 12021- the songs here on The Bad Lands exist between songs 10 and 11 of the Uprising.

For Benjamin and Melissa.

Shout Outs to Kevin, Anthony, Amber, and Freddy (Ricky).
