FAWM 2022: The Observations

by Strange Talking Animals

Hello, do you think I am insane? With all the things I say Did I drive you all away? Goodbye, was it something that I said? Or maybe what I did? I could take it back if you like Why should I change for you when you won't change for me? Why are you standing there without a care in the world? So long, and thanks for all the fish But if you could make a wish And change the state of the world I know everything I shouldn't say As they all become clichés But it's who I am today Why should I change for you when you won't change for me? Why are you standing there without a care in the world? There goes another plastic tree It's growing, can't you see? It's become our legacy Why should I change for you when you won't change for me? Why are you standing there without a care in the world?

Awkward 03:26
Can you see the road ahead Or the road behind you, instead? Are you clear enough to understand that what you hear Is not the thing you dread? Can you see if there is a better way? Or is your answer as clear as day? Do you want to find the question first Before your words become cliché? Why do you scream when you only need to talk? Think it through, before you speak Or things might get awkward Are there people who believe in you? Or any people you believe in, too? If you think about it long enough The person you believe in most, is you Can you see the empty road ahead? Does the emptiness fill your mind with dread? Are you quick enough to comprehend That what you fear is something you misread? Why do you run when you only need to walk The lies your spread should really stop Why do you scream when you only need to talk Think it through, before you speak Or things might get awkward Really awkward I'm just saying, awkward Because it's awkward

Do you want to believe, or do you want to pretend That the fires getting closer won't lead to your end? When the meteors fall and you crash into the wall Will you find a way to fight, or give in at the site? The chaos closes in, but you don't want to begin And the storm is getting stronger as you crumble to the ground Will you stand up and fight and see another night? How can you run when you won't even stand? And how can you bury your head in the sand when the tide is rising? Where do you go when you don't want me to know About the secrets you are keeping, incognito? And what about the whispers that you hear in the pouring rain? Do they tell you ow to live, or how to start again? What can you do? And what should you say? Can you fortify your answers and keep the hounds at bay? Do you want to hear a secret floating on the waves? Stand still and do nothing for as long as you can How can you run when you can't understand That the longer you keep your head in the sand, The tide is rising

Ethereal 04:24
How I long for the Sea to engulf me To feel the warmth of the waves To float atop the expanding tide How I long for the Sea to entreat me to its seaweed fingers Flooded eyes and water on the brain How I long for the Sea to swallow me To sink into its murky depths How I long for the Sea to engulf me To see the Sunlight vanish before my hands How I long for the Sea to open me To dream the dolphin's dream To sing the humpback's song How I long for the Sea to marry me To be one with the Ocean To be one with the Waves How I long for the Sea to take me To succumb to the Ocean To be one with the Waves How I long for the Sea to engulf me To feel the surge of power in my head To be filled to the point of bursting How I long for the Sea to murder me To feel the icy fins of death within the depths of the frozen Sea How I long for the Sea to swallow me To sink into its murky depths How I long for the Sea to engulf me To feel the warmth of its waves How I long to be free How I long for the Sea to marry me To be one with the Ocean To be one with the Waves How I long for the Sea to take me To succumb to the Ocean To be one with the Waves
5.
I want to know how you sleep at night With the lies you tell yourself What makes you think you're right? When you can't even stand the sight of anything different Or when the truth is right in front of your eyes You want to believe that everything you think Is how the world is, because you can't understand You want to hide as many of your lies Because it makes you feel big But you still don't understand You scream at the world because you are afraid Of the truth that faces you everyday So you cover your eyes and bury your head in the sand Is how the world is, because you can't understand You want to hide as many of your lies Because it makes you feel big But you still don't understand Why are you so afraid of everything and everyone around you? All the things you hate really define you They show the world who you really are I want to know how you can sleep at night With the lies you tell yourself What makes you think you're right? When you can't even stand the sight of everything That's different Or when the truth is right in front of your eyes You want to believe that everything you think is how the world is But you live in fear
6.
Them 02:49
Why do I feel like I'm floating far above the atmosphere? I see the little people gloating, laughing at me and my fears I turn away just to ignore them, but I feel their burning eyes Watching me drift into nothing, but I will not dignify them Maybe I should ignore them Can you hear their little chatter noises, clicking like a den of thieves They brag about their victories (there is nothing but a pile of leaves) And when they're backed into a corner, they point out where you might be wrong Sleight of hand will show you nothing (something they had all along) Maybe you should ignore them Let them fade into the night or maybe we should implore them to learn the difference between wrong and right Down, down they go They will drag us all below Why should we respect their nonsense When they won't reciprocate? They call us names because they're angry Expect us to accommodate them It's really hard to ignore them As their world begins to decay Maybe we shouldn't ignore them And do something about their destructive ways Because down, down they'll go And they'll drag us all below

Madness Is 04:42
Madness is a way of escaping justice or a way of life Madness is time for tea at ground zero and little cheese trinkets Madness is a dream, and madness is you Madness is sitting in the forest and watching nature on your phone Madness is starting all the rumors and then telling them that it's all lies Madness is a dream, and madness is you Madness is experience underlined by ignorance Madness is a way to see things differently or a way to hide Madness is a dream, and madness is me and you
8.
Lemmings 03:03
Why do you run when you need to walk? You open your mouth when you shouldn't talk You empty the coffers when you need to save And you follow the bear cub into the cave You burn all your bridges when you need to cross You know the directions even when you are lost You blame it on others when you are afraid You cover the garden when you think you want shade Why do you run into the fences? You should try to open your eyes Where is the fire? Where is the smoke? You laugh at the danger as if it's a joke You choke on the questions when you ignore Answers that ruminate drip on the floor Why to you run when you need to walk? You open your mouth when you shouldn't talk You burn all your bridges, you set them on fire You lower the bar when you should take it higher Why do you hide from the answers? You should try to open your mind Why do you run into fences? You should try to open your eyes

Drowning 03:30
The river seems to flow no matter where I go I can feel the undertow, dragging me down below And when I try to stand, I sink into the sand I can see the water rise A momentary gaze that seems to last for days A life in disarray, just floating in the haze I try to understand the power of my hands And I can feel the water rise How can I dry my eyes When everything around me dies How can I soar into the empty skies When I feel the waters rise A solitary life is not what I designed I persevere despite being left behind When everything I planned is buried in the sand I will feel the waters rise How can I dry my eyes When everything around me dies How can I soar into the empty skies When I feel the waters rise

Here comes the rain again and it's breaking down the walls It's overflowing the rivers and it's turning them into falls Where can we run? There is no where left to hide The waters are getting deeper with the ever-rising tide Our homes are being flooded, with people trapped inside How do we get your attention before every single one of us dies? There goes another home washing down the mountainside The government said they'd help us, but now we know that the government lied They told us that if want to live then we should shelter in place But where can we take our children when no where else is safe? Our homes are being flooded, with people trapped inside How do we get your attention before every one of us dies? The levees have all been broken and the dams have opened wide The waters are getting deeper and there's nowhere left to hide Our homes are being flooded, with people trapped inside But how do we get your attention before every single one of us dies?

Mystified 03:57
Day after day, we march through a haze Following the trails that others dared to blaze We take for granted the things we never did Time passes by and we forgot to try No one knows where the road begins And no one will unless we try Take a chance and see if you can live You just might end up mystified Night after night, we pretend it's alright Following the lights that lead us to nowhere Where is the path that will take us away from here? Maybe it's time to take some chances No one knows where the road begins And no one will unless we try Take a chance and see if you can live You just might end up mystified

about

This album also came about because of my friend Anthony, who introduced me to a thing called FAWM.org. February Album Writing Month.

The idea behind FAWM is to inspire writers to try and write 14 songs in 28 days. Over achiever that I am, I wrote and recorded 33 songs that will be spread out over four or five albums. This is the second album.

These 11 songs are observational in nature: things I've witnessed, attitudes I've experienced, implied or actual; some are heavy, some are lighter. Some themes are quite personal, and some are quite the opposite. (I'll mention a bit on each track). All songs were written and recorded during the month of February 2022.

For Benjamin and Melissa, and for Shawn.

Thanks to Chris for another awesome photo to use!

None of these songs would have happened without Anthony Kapfer. Thank you, my musical brother, resident satirist, personal sounding board, and humorian (I made that last word up- deal with it- again).
