The Effects of the Modern Dream

about

Written by me on April 26, 1987. A busy April for a new songwriter. Cheese and more cheese, please. At 18, I was feeling like I had some ideas and some thoughts that might, you know, help, or be universal or something (eye roll).

lyrics

The day is done, our bodies call for sleep,
What all can we keep when the night has already won?
The loss of hope- the cries of a modern man
Who has the gun in his hand? You've got to understand.

You get teared down, then you're ripped back up.
You're hurting inside. What does it all mean?
The effects of the modern dream.
Let me out, let me scream. I'm down on my luck again.
It seems I ain't got no friends.
The effects of the modern dream.

You feel sorry. You feel sorry for yourself.
You never took it off the shelf, you never read about me.
How will you know if anyone is trying to reach you?
If anyone is trying to teach you which way to go?
The effects of the modern dream.

You speak your mind, you don't care who you hurt.
You treat them all like dirt- you're so unkind.
Please set them free. god you know what I want to be.
I just want to make them see the effects of the dream

You don't have to be like them,
There'll be life when it all ends.
Stop conforming and hating and worrying and living these lies.

You've got to build back up. You've got to never ever give in.
I know you can win.
The effects of the modern dream.
Don't let them affect you- they don't know what I do.
I know you can beat the effects of the modern dream.
