My brother and his family lived just East of Lake Pontchartrain when Katrina hit. Fortunately, they had evacuated to Texas about 24 hours before Katrina hit New Orleans. Their house was left standing, but the waters rose to the six foot mark in their living room. Several houses around them were completely destroyed.

Fast forward to 2021, and Hurricane Ida hit New Orleans and New Jersey (and a lot of other places). Friends of mine, not a mile away from our home, almost died as their basement flooded in minutes. They made it to their second floor and survived. Not everyone was so lucky. Our township is 26 miles from the ocean.
